Kihei Charter School Enrollment Process
Thank you for your interest in Kihei Charter School. All new students will be asked to “self-select” into the school based on their willingness and desire to participate in the type of work that the school and academy of choice promotes. In order to be considered for any enrollment slot a candidate must have submitted a complete application. Our enrollment process is a multi-step process:
1. Attend a mandatory information session, either in person (see dates at left) or online.
2. View the Powerpoint presentation for the appropriate academy:
3. See what a day in the life of KCS student is like by exploring our teachers’ web pages under the Student and Parents link – Schoolconcept.
4. Complete the application with all demographic information. Respond to the student and parent questionnaires.
5. Complete and return the application and questionnaires to the school.
The school will fill vacant slots in each enrollment period to meet the projected enrollments for each grade and each Academy. Our first enrollment period for the 2010-11 school year will run from March 3 to March 31. All applications received during that period will be considered part of the first application period. If the school receives fewer applications than available spots, the school can extend offers of provisional acceptance to all applicants (provisional pending receipt of health records and transcripts). Students and families will be notified by mail of provisional acceptance within the first week of April, May and June. Families will need to complete and return paperwork to the school verifying that they will accept and fill the enrollment slot. Failure to return these documents or notify the school of their intent will result in the termination of that student’s application and consideration for enrollment for the school year. If the school receives more applicants than available spots the school then conducts a random lottery and any applicants not chosen at random for an available spot will be placed on a waiting list.
The second enrollment period will run during the month of April and the third enrollment period will run during the month of May. In the case of a waitlist, applicants in these enrollment periods will be entered into a lottery to determine the order of the waitlist. Starting on June 1st, applicants will be placed on the waiting list in the order in which they are received. Available slots will be offered to the first students on the list and the remaining students will then be ranked on waiting lists based on grade level, gender and Academy. Efforts will be made to gender balance classes in each enrollment period.
Waiting lists will be sorted by Academy, grade level and gender. The list will be maintained through the first semester of the year and will be used to fill available enrollment slots, should they come available, at the end of 1st quarter and again at the end of 2nd quarter. After the winter break, the list will be dissolved and families will be contacted and informed that they will need to re-submit an application to be considered for a spot for the next school year.
Students must be residents of the island of Maui in order to be eligible for enrollment into Kihei Charter School.
